The University of Virginia has received a $25 million gift from Philip Morris USA to fund research into smoking-related diseases. About $20 million will go to the medical school and about $5 million will go to the McIntire School of Commerce.

The Asian Law Center at the University of Washington School of Law has received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of State to fund a three-year project aimed at improving access to legal help in rural China.
