Virginia Police: UVA Honor Student Falsely Charged

According to the Richmond Free Press, Virginia State ABC officials falsely charged a Black University of Virginia student, Martese Johnson, with public intoxication knowing he was not intoxicated, says a state police report on the March 18 arrest of the student.

The University of Virginia came under fire yet again last month, when Johnson was brutally beaten during his arrest outside of a bar in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Police arrested Johnson for allegedly having a fake ID and resisting arrest although conflicting reports say that Johnson cooperated with police. Pictures of Johnson’s bloodied face circulated the Internet and fueled national outrage surrounding the incident.

Following the controversial arrest, AP reports that Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe issued an investigation into the arrest and appointed a panel to meet and review the activities of the state’s ABC department.
