Austin College (Texas) has received a $2.5 million gift from alum John Q. Adams Sr. and his wife, Vicki. A lecture hall in the college’s planned science facility will be named the Cindy Adams Black Lecture Hall in honor of John Adams’ late sister.
Burnham Institute for Medical Research (Calif.) has received more than $6 million in funding from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Two separate four-year grants will fund human stem cell research, with the goal of improving treatments for stroke, Parkinson’s disease and heart disease.
The Christopher Family Foundation has awarded a $1 million gift to the Chicago Project, an international consortium led by the University of Illinois at Chicago. The project’s objective is to improve and refine islet cell transplantation, which could improve the treatment of diabetes.
Essex County College (N.J.) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to help increase enrollment, graduation and transfer rates for minority students in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. The five-year grant will create the Cultivating the Stem program.
Howard University (D.C.) has received a $1 million donation from DaimlerChrysler to fund new scholarships at the university. The School of Business and the School of Engineering will be the primary beneficiaries of the new scholarships.
San Francisco State University has received a $100,000 gift from social activist Paul Louie to create a new scholarship to help fund educationally disadvantaged students at the university. The Louie Loy and Leong Shee Memorial Scholarship is named after Louie’s parents, who emigrated to the United States from China.
Shaw University (N.C.) has received a $5 million gift from John Mack, the CEO of Morgan Stanley. The gift will endow a new scholarship fund for students in the science, technology, engineering and
math fields.
The United Negro College Fund has received a $1 million gift from Exxon Mobil to support UNCF’s programs. The nonprofit organization intends to use the gift to help increase minority degree attainment by reducing financial barriers to higher education.
