CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY-NORTHRIDGE has received a $150,000 gift from philanthropist Robert Barbera to support the university’s Collegiate Forensics Invitational Tournament and other debate programs. The gift will be used largely to help students recognize the value of public debate.
HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE (Md.) has received a $1.5 MILLION gift from the Rouse Company Foundation to build a new student services building on campus. The building, which will house a bookstore and student dining service as well as administrative offices, has been named the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall.
MIAMI DADE COLLEGE (Fla.) has received a $300,000 donation from the Jackson Memorial Foundation to help expand the school’s nursing program to combat South Florida’s critical nursing shortage. The donation will fund 80 full scholarships and add two full-time and up to eight adjunct faculty members.
The NATIONAL COLLEGE ACCESS NETWORK has received a $40,000 gift from Nelnet, an education planning and financing company. The gift will be used to improve access to postsecondary education.
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY (Ill.) has received a $1 MILLION grant from the Searle Funds at the Chicago Community Trust to renovate and expand Searle Hall. The grant is in honor of the late John G. Searle, who initially donated the funds for the building.
The Ford Foundation has awarded a $223,000 grant to the Department of African American Studies at SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY (N.Y.). The grant will help develop the department’s gender and environmental justice curriculum.
The UNITED STATES NATIONAL SLAVERY MUSEUM has received a $200,000 donation from Philip Morris USA to support the museum. The donation will be used to increase the museum’s staff and overall fundraising.
The UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA has received a four-year, $240,000 grant from the Anheuser-Busch brewing company to create a social norms project called ÒExpanding the Manoa Alcohol Project.Ó The alcohol awareness program will help promote positive social behavior among university students and reduce underage drinking and abusive behavior on campus.
The UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA has received a seven-year, $22.5 MILLION grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease to study avian influenza, or bird flu. The grant will create the Minnesota NIH/NIAID Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance, one of six such centers in the country.
