Susan LambArt Tyler has stepped down as chancellor of the City College of San Francisco and Susan Lamb has been named as the interim successor.
Tyler had served in his role as leader of the embattled institution for 19 months during which time the college had to stave off challenges to its accreditation that would have resulted in it being shut down. No explanation was given Friday for the shakeup.
Lamb had been serving as the college’s vice-chancellor of academic affairs. Tyler, according to a statement released by the college, will stay on as vice chancellor of facilities and be responsible for development of the school’s facilities master plan over the coming year.
“[Lamb’s] knowledge of the college and of accreditation makes her an excellent leader for the next phase of development of the college,” Special Trustee Guy Lease and California Community College Chancellor Brice Harris wrote in a joint college-wide announcement.
In the meantime, the college is working on being able to demonstrate being in full compliance of accrediting criteria by fall of 2016. The decision by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges is expected by early 2017.
City College’s Board of Trustees will regain full responsibility for oversight of the college next month, with the Special Trustee’s powers reduced to include stay and rescind only. The board will then begin the search for the next permanent chancellor.
