Tony Brown Going into Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame

Tony Brown, a renowned journalist and educator, has been selected for induction into the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Hall of Fame, the organization announced Wednesday.

Brown, university dean emeritus and professor of the Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, is producer and host of Tony Brown’s Journal. The nationally televised minority affairs show was known as Black Journal when he came aboard in 1970 and is recognized as the longest-running series in that category.

In 1971, Brown became the founding dean of the Howard University School of Communications. He became the founding dean of Hampton University’s School of Journalism and Communications in 2004.

NABJ, celebrating its 40th anniversary, will hold the induction ceremony on Dec. 16 in Washington. Brown was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Silver Circle in 2002, putting him in the company of such legends as Walter Cronkite as those who “have made enduring contributions to the vitality of the television industry and set the highest standards of achievement for all to emulate.”
