Mississippi higher education officials said Wednesday that it will be August or September before Alcorn State University’s new president assumes his post.
George E. Ross, who was selected as the school’s president earlier this year, is being treated for acute leukemia at a Michigan hospital. He was originally expected to start his new position at Alcorn on July 2.
According to Alcorn’s interim president, Malvin Williams, Dr. Ross will remain hospitalized until the end of this month. He then will need time to rest and is not expected in Lorman until sometime in August or September.
Central Michigan spokesman Steve Smith said Ross and his wife, Elizabeth, are “in high spirits, and the notes the cards and letters have been wonderful. The nurses say the room looks like no other, with cards all over the wall.”
Ross, 52, was most recently vice president for finance and administrative services at Central Michigan University.
He is to succeed Clinton Bristow Jr., who died of heart failure last August.
