Tribal College Honors American Indian Veterans

KYLE S.D.

A monument honoring more than 1,800 American Indian military veterans will be dedicated Saturday six miles southwest of Kyle at the administrative headquarters of Oglala Lakota College.

College President Thomas Shortbull said the monument will include the names of Indians who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.

“American Indians have had the highest rate of service of any racial group in defending this country,” Shortbull said. “Oglala Lakota College is showing its appreciation and gratitude for the Oglala war veterans with the monument.”

The monument features life-sized bronze statues of a male Indian veteran and a female Indian veteran.
