UNC Hospitals’ pharmacy director removed after auditors question expenses

by Associated Press , July 1, 2007

CHAPEL HILL N.C.

The pharmacy director at UNC Hospitals was removed from his position after state auditors said he double-billed the state for travel expenses and submitted his son's travel and cell phone bill.

An auditor's report said James C. McAllister III submitted expense claims of $3,573 for travel and cell phone charges of his son, a pharmacy student at the university. The report said McAllister also received $1,125 in duplicate expense claims.

Auditors also said he should repay $3,496. He already has repaid $1,202.

McAllister's "status remains active, and we are looking at reviewing our personnel processes," UNC Health Care spokesman Lynn Wooten said Friday.

A telephone message left for James McAllister in Chapel Hill wasn't returned Saturday.

The Office of the State Auditor received an allegation about McAllister, saying he had violated the university's rules that prohibit duplicate expenses and ban payments for people who accompany an employee during travel.

The report said McAllister and his son attended a December 2005 pharmacy in Las Vegas. He also billed the hospital and the university for air fare to a meeting in Miami in October 2005 and double-billed meal expenses for a 2003 trip to Cincinnati.
