UNC Wilmington hires athletic director

by Associated Press , July 2, 2007

WILMINGTON N.C.

UNC Wilmington hired Kelly Landry Mehrtens as its athletic director Monday.

Mehrtens is coming from Kansas, where for nearly four years she was associate director of athletics and a senior women's administrator. She will begin at UNC Wilmington on Aug. 13.

"We have a terrific group of coaches, staff and student-athletes who are committed to athletic and academic excellence," Mehrtens said. "I'm committed to those same goals, as well as the seven strategic goals for the university."

Mehrtens replaces Mike Capaccio, who was fired in April after a monthlong review of his department.

"We're very excited about Kelly's selection and welcome her to the (UNC Wilmington) family," Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo said. "She brings a wonderful background in collegiate athletics to the position and, without question, will provide outstanding leadership for our growing program."
