AUBURN HILLS Mich.

A South Lyon man accidentally shot and killed a fraternity brother at a party while playing with a gun, police said.

Police charged Marcus Jun-Mon Yu in the death of Karl Joseph Hansen, 21, of Pinckney, a fellow engineering student at Kettering University in Flint and fellow member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

"This is a terrible tragedy between two close friends, college classmates," Auburn Hills police Lt. James Manning said.

Hansen, who was asleep at the time Saturday, died of a gunshot wound to the head, police told The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, The Oakland Press and the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.

The men were close friends and families of both have requested privacy.

According to police, the gun's owner another fraternity brother was sleeping and didn't know Yu had the weapon.

Yu was arraigned Monday in 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills on a charge of involuntary manslaughter, a 15-year felony. He is scheduled to be back in court for a pre-exam conference July 11.

About seven people were in the apartment when the shooting occurred, police said.
