BLOOMINGTON Ind.
An honors college dean has been picked to become the new provost of Indiana University’s Bloomington campus, officials announced Thursday.
Karen Hanson, a philosophy professor who has been dean of the Hutton Honors College since 2002, was picked by a search committee for the job as the top academic officer on IU’s 38,000-student main campus, said university President Michael McRobbie, who had been interim provost until taking office as president on Sunday.
“A philosopher by trade, she has the tools necessary to answer the most critical questions facing our university as it enters an era of great change and exciting possibility,” McRobbie said.
McRobbie has asked Hanson to give special attention to ongoing campus initiatives aimed at strengthening IU academically and improving its diversity, the university said.
Her appointment is subject to approval by the school’s Board of Trustees.
Hanson has taught at IU since 1976. She received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 1970 and a doctoral degree in philosophy from Harvard in 1980.
