University of New England Professor Sues School

BIDDEFORD, Maine ― A University of New England professor is suing the college, alleging officials took away some of her teaching duties and responsibilities after she accused her department chairman of sexual harassment.

The Portland Press Herald reports associate professor Lara Carlson is accusing the Biddeford-based private university of violating her civil rights under Title IX, a federal law.

Her suit alleges that the department chairman made inappropriate sexual comments and touched her inappropriately in 2012. She says the school took no action after she notified officials.

Carlson claims she suffered a series of professional setbacks over the next three years, including being removed from teaching certain classes. She is seeking damages from the school.

UNE denied the accusations and says Carlson failed to exhaust administrative remedies.
