Letter Reveals Government’s Earlier Reaction to UVa Probe

By Associated Press

WASHINGTON —In a previously secret letter that was later withdrawn, federal officials censured the University of Virginia over issues of sexual violence on campus.

The Washington Post reports officials last year concluded the university had “abdicated” its legal responsibility to act on reports of sexual violence within the school’s powerful Greek system and took a “hands off” approach.

The criticism was part of a 39-page letter sent to university officials on Aug. 31, presenting the findings of a four-year-long investigation done by the U.S. Education Department Office for Civil Rights.

Four days later, a senior education official withdrew the letter. The university says it was riddled with inaccuracies.

A shorter, milder missive was issued later that month. The newspaper obtained the unreleased letter through a Freedom of Information Act request.
