Hampton University Receives $4 Million Grant

HAMPTON, Va.

Hampton University has been awarded a $4 million grant by the Scripps Howard Foundation for construction of a journalism building.
The gift to the historically Black university is intended to promote diversity in America’s newsrooms, says foundation president and CEO Judith G. Clabes.
Plans for the new Scripps Howard Center were announced by university and foundation officials at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Phoenix last month.
The foundation, the philanthropic arm of The E.W. Scripps Co., also announced a five-year, $300,000 grant to NABJ to develop journalism programs at Hampton.
The foundation previously donated $2.3 million to the university to establish the Scripps Howard Program in Journalism.
“We view our partnership with Hampton University as an important step forward — not just for our company, but for our entire industry — to address a problem that we all agree needs critical attention,” says Kenneth W. Lowe, president and chief operating officer of The E.W. Scripps Co.
Construction of the 25,000-square-foot building will begin in October and is projected for completion by fall 2001. The building will include six classrooms, a television studio, an auditorium and four computer labs.
The E.W. Scripps Co., based in Cincinnati, is a diverse media company whose holdings include 20 daily newspapers, 10 TV stations and three cable networks.
