UNC-Charlotte Opens Multicultural Resource Center
CHARLOTTE, N.C.
A new multicultural center is open on the University of North Carolina-Charlotte campus. The UNCC Multicultural Resource Center, inside the university’s Cone Center, is designed to provide social, cultural and educational activities and resources to the campus community and the general public.
The 670-square-foot center includes a resource library, computer stations and a conference room available to campus groups.
Director Gerald Spates said the center will address all areas of diversity, including gender, race, religion, national origin and sexual orientation. The idea for the center came from former UNCC student Joe Toomer, who roomed one year with three other students — one Japanese, one Black and one White.
“We became such good friends and learned so much about each other’s cultures. It was amazing,” Toomer says. “I thought if one room could do it, why couldn’t the whole campus?”
