CHARLOTTE, N.C.
The bar has been raised for capital campaign drives, and the beneficiary of that ascendancy is Johnson C. Smith University.

Edward E. Crutchfield, chairman and CEO of First Union Bank and campaign chairman for the historically Black university, announced earlier this month that Johnson C. Smith University's "Vision Shared" capital campaign has raised $63.8 million in just five years, surpassing the original goal of $50 million.

The "Vision Shared" campaign completes the largest goal of any nonprofit in the Charlotte metropolitan area, and it marks the most successful capital campaign of any HBCU in the Carolinas. Additionally, it is the second largest, campaign completed by any HBCU in the nation.

Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, the university's president, said, "The completion of the `Vision Shared: Campaign for the 90s' marks the first time in recent memory that a broad cross section of key leadership in Charlotte has joined Johnson C. Smith University's quest for national preeminence and educational distinction."

Of the fund, $34.9 million will go to current and new university programs; $14.1 million is slated for construction and renovation; $9.3 million will go into the endowment fund; and $5.5 million will go into an unrestricted fund.
