Last month, the University of Maryland-College Park announced theestablishment of the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of theAfrican Diaspora. The center will offer the opportunity to study Africaand the African Diaspora from multidisciplinary perspectives –particularly the arts, languages, literature, and history.
A primary focus of the center will be to collaborate with othereducational institutions, museums, scholars, and collectors on ways tosupport the Diaspora and expand outreach to other communities, bothdomestic and international. It will be funded by a $3 millioninitiative that will provide for an endowed chair and supportinterdisciplinary curricula for the study of the African Diaspora.
The center is named for Dr. David C. Driskell, the DistinguishedUniversity Professor of Art who has taught at the university fortwenty-one years.
The establishment of the new center coincides with the opening of”Narratives of African American art and Identity: The David C. DriskellCollection” at The Art Gallery in the Art and Sociology Building atCollege Park. The free exhibit features 100 pieces of artwork andarchival material from Driskell’s collection and is on display throughDecember 19. Online access is available at
Yale University has established the Gilder Lehrman Center for theStudy of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition. Dr. David Brion Davis, theuniversity’s Sterling Professor of History and a Pulitzer Prize-winningauthor, will serve as the center’s director. Davis is considered thenation’s foremost scholar of slavery and abolition.
Aside from fostering an understanding of — and disseminatinginformation about — slavery, the center will also host conferences andvisiting scholars, engage in teacher training and curriculumdevelopment, and administer the annual Frederick Douglas Book Prize. Itwill also sponsor publications, lectures, and research fellowships.
