The Price of Operatic Success

WASHINGTON

University Howard voice students got a novel
opportunity to take instruction from a world-class musical talent
earlier this month, when opera legend Leontyne Price took center stage
at Cramton Auditorium to conduct a master class.

Although the public was welcome to observe, participation in the
class was available only to a select group of students and recent
graduates of Howard’s College of Arts and Sciences. Each sang short
opera selections, and received critical feedback and tips on
vocalization technique from Price.

The results, judging from the reaction of the audience of 500, met
with rousing cheers as students sang and re-sang well-known opera
selections. Imploring her students to enjoy the selections they sang,
Price displayed a demanding style that belied her great passion for the
music.

“I learned more in forty minutes than I have in the duration of my
singing career,” said soprano Sonja Teal, after a stirring session with
Price.

The master class also featured Price singing short sections of the
operatic selections that the students had performed for her, to the
delight of the audience. Selections included “Una Furtiva Lagrima” from
L’elisir D’amore: Act II, “O Mio Babino Caro” from Gianni Schicci, and
“Gluck: Lied des Marietta” from Die tote Stadt: Act I.
