HATTIESBURG, Miss. ― A former professor of religion at a private university in Mississippi is suing the school for ending his job.
Daniel Browning worked at William Carey University 26 years and had tenure the last 20. He was fired April 28.
The Hattiesburg American reports Browning filed suit Thursday in Forrest County Circuit Court against the university, its president and its board of trustees. The lawsuit says no reasons were given in his termination notice, violating provisions of tenure.
Browning is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
The newspaper reports that William Carey officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.
The university told Browning weeks after he was fired that his classes and a related travel program “operated at a financial loss for years.”
