Texas Southmost College President Lily Tercero Fired

BROWNSVILLE, Texas ― The president of a South Texas community college has been fired amid issues with its vocational nursing program and a new windstorm insurance contract.

Trustees of Texas Southmost College in Brownsville voted Monday to dismiss President Lily Tercero.

The college earlier this year was put on “conditional approval status” by the Texas Board of Nursing over concerns about lagging passing rates for the state licensing exam. Tercero also faced questions over why she agreed to a campus windstorm policy without board approval.

Trustees on Aug. 1 put Tercero on administrative leave, with pay. Mike Shannon was named interim president.

An attorney for Tercero, who was Texas Southmost College president since October 2011, says they will be reviewing her legal options.
