Students Protest Racial Incidents at American University

WASHINGTON ― American University students are demanding the suspension of two White students accused of throwing a banana at a Black woman in a dorm this month.

An interracial crowd of hundreds gathered Monday to demand changes. Another Black student on the same floor of the dorm, Neah Gray, tells media outlets that she found a rotten banana outside her door and an obscene drawing on the whiteboard attached to her door.

The university’s Black Student Alliance said in a statement last week that there have been racial tensions on campus for some time.

University President Neil Kerwin condemns the acts as “reprehensible.” His statement said the student conduct process has held accountable those involved in throwing the banana, and the other incident is under investigation.
