Several hundred North Carolina
college students are taking part in a program aimed at reducing their
ecological footprints while studying abroad.
About 600 students from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill are taking part in the Green Passport initiative. The program
features guidelines for recycling, getting involved in community projects, and
staying in locally-owned hotels instead of chains.
“Instead of each student having their own car like in
Chapel Hill they should take public transportation,” said Rodney Vargas,
an assistant director at the university’s Study Abroad Office who founded the
Green Passport initiative.
He called it a “small, but significant
contribution” to global sustainability. Added Vargas: “We’re not
asking them to walk to Mexico.”
UNC Chapel Hill is working with Abroad View, a global
education magazine for students. Participants can create profiles on the Abroad
View Web site that can include photos, journals or summaries.
