President Bush to honor University of Michigan math professor

ANN ARBOR Mich.
A University of Michigan professor is joining an elite grouprecipients of the National Medal of Science.

Hyman Bass was to be presented with the nation’s highesthonor for scientific achievement during a White House ceremony on Friday.

Bass, a professor of mathematics and mathematics education,is one of eight laureates who were to receive medals administered by theNational Science Foundation.

Bass is the first Michigan researcher to win the award in 21years. Five other Michigan researchers won the award between 1974 and 1986.

Bass is being honored “for his fundamentalcontributions to pure mathematics, especially in the creation of algebraicK-theory, his profound influence on mathematics education, and his service tothe mathematics research and education communities,” according to the awardcitation.

The award program, which was established by Congress in1959, honors individuals for pioneering scientific research in fields,including physical, biological, mathematical, social, behavioral andengineering sciences.
