SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City newspaper is suing for access to records from Brigham Young University’s police department.
The Salt Lake Tribune plans to argue in court Monday that BYU Police are subject to as much public scrutiny as any other public law enforcement agency in Utah because the state granted the school department full policing powers.
The newspaper requested copies of emails between police and the university’s honor code office as part of its reporting on allegations that the university was investigating sex assault victims.
BYU Police denied the request and said the privately-owned university is exempt from complying with state public records law.
