CSU officers say community policing keeps crime low

FORT COLLINS Colo.

Colorado State University police say a community policing program has kept campus crime low.

Four or fewer sexual assaults have been reported every year since 2003 and no robberies have been reported since 2004, state statistics show. Bike theft remains the most common crime on campus.

“We’re proud of what’s going on,” CSU police Lt. Mark Childress said.

Childress said the community policing program, initiated by campus Police Chief Dexter Yarbrough when he took the job in September 2003, entails having officers spend time each day talking with students, staff and faculty about problems they see.

“We’re getting a lot of input as to what the problem areas are,” he said.
