Legislator says he may want EKU president’s job

RICHMOND Ky.

A state representative said he may consider pursuing the vacant president’s job at Eastern Kentucky University.

State Rep. Harry Moberly, D-Richmond, said he will consider applying for the position once the search for a permanent replacement for Joanne Glasser is under way. Moberly, who works at the university as director of student judicial affairs and services for individuals with disabilities at the university, said he would not be interested in becoming the interim president.

Moberly said he wants to get through the upcoming budget session of the General Assembly before making any commitments about pursuing the president’s position.

“I haven’t had anytime to think about it since this has all happened so quickly. I didn’t have any notice that the president was going to resign this week,” Moberly said.

Eastern Kentucky University’s Board of Regents is set to meet Monday in the first step in replacing Glasser, who resigned last week to accept the job as president of Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.

Hunter Bates, chairman of the Board of Regents, said the board will first look for an interim president, then take up conducting a national search for Glasser’s replacement.

“We’re very proud that President Glasser was sought out by another institution,” Bates said. “I think that indicates that she made great contributions here at EKU. I always had a good relationship with her and have appreciated her contributions to the institution.”

Glasser, 56, was scheduled to speak Wednesday to faculty and staff during her annual opening convocation. The event will go on as planned, but a speaker has not been announced.

Glasser said she planned to assist Eastern Kentucky with its transition, then be in place at Bradley well before students return at the end of this month.

Before becoming Eastern Kentucky’s president in 2001, Glasser was executive vice president and chief advancement officer at Towson University near Baltimore. Glasser also was a finalist for president of Illinois State University in Normal in 2004.
