Salem State President Stepping Down after 10 Years

SALEM, Mass. — Salem State University is looking for a new president.

Patricia Maguire Meservey says she will retire after about a decade at the helm of the school. The board of trustees says a search committee will be set up to find a successor, and Meservey plans to remain until the transition to new leadership is completed.

Meservey became the school’s 13th president in 2007 after serving as provost and academic vice president at Suffolk University.

The school changed its name from Salem State College to Salem State University in 2010. Trustees say that during Meservey’s tenure graduation rates increased, 760,000 square feet of new academic and student life space was added and more than $26 million was raised in a fundraising campaign.

The university has about 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
