A central Kentucky teen received a perfect score on two college entrance exams.
John Liu, 17, a senior at Danville High School, scored a perfect 2400 on the SAT and a perfect 36 on the ACT.
The feat is unusual, education officials said.
Kristin Crouse, a spokeswoman with ACT, said scoring perfectly on one exam is hard enough, but to score perfectly on both exams is a “remarkable achievement.”
During the 2006-07 school year, more than 2.2 million ACT tests were administered. Only 177 came back with a 36. Of the nearly 1.5 million SAT exams taken, only 269 came back with a 2400.
Liu said he attended a three-week summer camp and studied several test-preparation books before taking the SAT exam first.
“I think the ACT was a side effect of studying so hard for the SAT,” he said.
He was one of five students from Kentucky who scored a 36 on the ACT last year, according to recently released results.
The other four students are Matthew Diasio from Ballard High School in Louisville, David Parell and Victor Yang from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington and Jake Machin from Daviess County High School in Owensboro.
A spokeswoman for the College Board, which administers the SAT, said she didn’t know how many students from Kentucky achieved a perfect score on that test last year.
Win Smith, principal at Danville, described Liu as quiet, but a very active student with a sense of humor.
“We are very proud of him,” Smith said.
