SIU discloses Poshard’s contract as university system’s president

Details of Glenn Poshard’s contract as president of the 35,000-student Southern Illinois University system:

CONTRACT LENGTH: Five years, through Dec. 31, 2010.

BASE SALARY: $291,764 a year.

BENEFITS: Annual annuity of $55,066, including $30,066 in lieu of his not participating in the State Universities Retirement System. Poshard also gets a $27,500 yearly housing allowance and a university-supplied vehicle. He has opted not to have university-provided health insurance.

PROHIBITIONS: The former five-term Democratic congressman and one-time candidate for Illinois governor agrees not to engage in partisan politics as president and may not endorse any political candidate. He may contribute to any political campaign of his choosing.

CAUSES FOR OUSTER: The university’s board of trustees may fire Poshard at any time for “just cause,” including “any conduct of the president that constitutes moral turpitude, or that would tend to bring public disrespect, contempt or ridicule upon the university.”
