Higher ACT score required for Bright Flight scholarships

JEFFERSON CITY Mo.

High school seniors seeking a Bright Flight scholarship from the state will have to be a little bit brighter this year.

The $2,000 scholarships are awarded to students who have a composite score on the ACT and SAT tests in the top 3 percent of all Missouri students taking those college-prep tests.

For years, the qualifying score on the ACT, which is the test most college-bound students take in Missouri, has been 30.

On Friday, the Missouri Department of Higher Education said the qualifying score on the ACT will be 31. The qualifying scores on the SAT will be 790 in math and 780 on the verbal test, rather than the 780 in math and 780 in verbal required previously.

The qualifying scores are determined by the ACT and College Board assessment companies.

Seniors who have already taken the ACT and received a 30 have been notified by letter of the new requirement, said spokeswoman Wendy Baker. Those seniors have to retake the test and achieve the 31 score by June, she said, and there are five test dates remaining before then.
