North Carolina State University said Friday it will name its graduate school of management in honor of Benjamin P. Jenkins III, vice chairman and president of Wachovia Corp.’s general bank.
“The College of Management is very pleased to be associated with the values and achievements that have marked Ben’s 35-year career with Wachovia,” said dean Ira R. Weiss in a statement. “His career path transitioning from a technology-focused undergraduate degree to senior leadership positions with Wachovia parallels the transition that many of our technology-oriented graduate students seek in coming to our programs.”
Jenkins, 63, earned his bachelor’s degree in textiles chemistry from N.C. State in 1968. He’s been in his current position with the Charlotte-based bank since 1999, but previously held leadership positions with First Union banks from Florida to Maryland.
Since it was established in 1992, N.C. State’s College of Management has focused on providing management education for individuals with a science or technology background.
“I think the College of Management’s graduate programs have the potential to be among the top two to three graduate schools of business for technology-oriented students,” Jenkins said in a statement. “It’s not just the technical skills that you need to be successful; it’s the people skills.”
The new Jenkins Graduate School of Management will offer Master of Accounting and Master of Business Administration programs, as well as a Graduate Economics Program, which is offered jointly by the College of Management and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
