Duke University in North Carolina received $1 million from NBA player and former Duke basketball star Grant Hill and his wife, Tamia, to establish an endowment fund for athletic scholarship support at the university. The Hills' gift is the largest to the university from a former basketball player and will create the Grant and Tamia Hill Scholarship Endowment Fund to provide financial aid for a Duke basketball player each year.

The University of Georgia is one of eight institutions receiving grants from the U.S. Department of Education to better train teachers for the challenges of today's classrooms. The University of Georgia's program, which is partnered with other colleges and universities in the state and with the Georgia Systemic Teacher Education Program, will receive $878,294 for the initial phase of the project and a total of $6.49 million over the five years of the grant.

The University of Idaho was awarded a five-year grant worth more than $9 million from the National Institutes of Health for research into animal and human diseases.

The University of Iowa has received $1 million from an Iowa City woman who is being treated at University Hospitals for leukemia. The donation will be used for leukemia and breast cancer research.

The University of Illinois at Springfield has received more than $500,000 from two local retired physicians to support scholarships for a new four-year baccalaureate program at the university. The new Capital Scholars program is designed to prepare future leaders for careers in government and elsewhere.

Texas Southern University's Department of Public Safety received a $121,000 grant from the Office of the Governor's Criminal Justice Division to support the TSU Bike Patrol Project.  n
