PITTSBURGH
The head of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute says he’s resigning that post to focus his time on research.
Dr. Ronald Herberman tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he’s not retiring or leaving the institute. Instead, the 66-year-old doctor says he’ll resign his director’s post by 2009.
Herberman is the first and only director of Pitt’s Cancer Institute and is largely responsible for it being named a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute in 1990. The designation has helped Herberman attract faculty to the institute, including more than 100 in the past five years.
Herberman directs the UPMC Cancer Centers, a network that treats about 30,000 patients a year.
