Enrollment up at Western New Mexico University

SILVER CITY N.M.

Western New Mexico University says enrollment this fall has risen by 5 percent over fall 2006.

“Enrollment is heading in the right direction,” said the school’s vice president of student affairs, Chris Farren.

“We’re up in almost every category, especially in the first-time, full-time freshman area,” Farren said. “We experienced an 18 percent increase in new freshman this semester.”

Preliminary enrollment figures, according to school registrar Betsy Miller, show 2,726 students attending classes at Western compared to 2,581 last fall, an increase of 145 students or 5.6 percent.

The total includes the main campus in Silver City and extended education centers in Deming, Gallup and Truth or Consequences.

The school also reported a 31.5 percent increase in online student credit hours being taken this semester, and Farren said Western will focus on adding more online programs in the future.

“When you experience this kind of an increase it means the recruitment efforts have been effective,” he said.
