The University of Memphis has been awarded five Access Diversity grants, totaling nearly $90,000, by the Tennessee Board of Regents, according to a report in the Memphis Business Journal.
The grants include:
$17,560 for the Leadership Challenge program, which develops leadership skills for university staff;
$13,800 for the Minority Undergraduate Mentoring and Immersion in Research program, which trains minority students who are interested in science and technology fields;
$38,176 for the FRESH Peer Mentor Program, which is designed to provide freshmen with resources and services to increase retention rates;
$10,000 for the Exploring History through Photography program, which teaches high school students basic photography;
$10,000 to promote and facilitate the enactment of diversity standards through a series of faculty seminars and symposiums.
The programs are specifically designed for the university, but the issues are common to all institutions of higher learning, according to Michelle Banks, coordinator of access/diversity for the University of Memphis.
“The proposals selected cover many different aspects of campus life and will benefit faculty, students, staff and the community,” Banks said.
