A University of Pittsburgh lab designed to develop vaccines to counter bioterror attacks and deadly pathogens is opening.
The $50 million Center for Vaccine Research will be one of 13 in the country that will research methods to fight lethal microbes.
While researchers will work on vaccines for possible bioterrorism agents, the main focus will be on vaccine research for some of the world’s most widespread and deadly diseases. They include dengue fever and tuberculosis.
The center includes a Regional Biocontainment Laboratory, one of 13 such facilities to receive funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Pitt’s lab is the second to open, after Duke University’s lab, which opened in February.
