Howard University Dean Named to Javits Fellowship Board

Dr. Orlando L. Taylor, dean of Howard University's Graduate School, has been named to the Jacob K. Javits Fellows Program Fellowship Board by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley.
Taylor, who also directs Howard's Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program and its Preparing Future Faculty Program, will serve a four-year term.
The Javits program, part of the Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education, provides competitive fellowships to outstanding graduate students who intend to pursue doctoral studies in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
"I am so pleased that Dr. Taylor has agreed to accept this appointment," Riley says. "His devotion to higher education is exemplified by his long and distinguished career at some of the nation's most prestigious universities. I am certain he will be a great asset to the Javits board."
Taylor expressed hope that he would bring a new awareness to the board. "Federal support for graduate education in the arts, humanities and the social sciences is in the national interest inasmuch as it leads ultimately to a greater understanding of humankind in multicultural America and the global community," he says. "The Jacob K. Javits Fellows Program is essential to our fulfillment of this noble purpose."
Taylor, who earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan, has been dean of Howard's Graduate School since 1993.
