UNC Officials May Raise Admission Standards to Reduce Dropouts

CHAPEL HILL N.C.

Getting into a University of North Carolina school could get tougher.

Officials are considering raising the minimum admission standards to a 2.0 grade point average and 700 SAT score for all students beginning in fall 2009. The requirements could get even tighter by 2013 with a required 2.5 GPA and 800 SAT score.

Officials say the goal is to prevent dropouts by admitting only students who are prepared to succeed at a four-year college. Raising UNC standards also could lead to more students being denied admission and instead attending community colleges.

The UNC Board of Governors is considering the changes, which would mainly affect six campuses: UNC Pembroke, Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, N.C. A&T State, N.C. Central and Winston-Salem State universities.
