PORT ANGELES, Wash.
About 500 people were on hand for the opening of the Peninsula College longhouse at the community college in Port Angeles.
The Native American longhouse believed to be the first in the nation at a community college will house artwork and be used for cultural classes, performances and other small gatherings.
The cedar building, which opened Monday, was a project of the college and six of the Olympic Peninsula’s Indian tribes. It cost $830,000, of which $250,000 came from private donations.
The tribes involved in the project are the Jamestown S’Klallam, Lower Elwha Klallam, Hoh, Quileute, Makah and Port Gamble S’Klallam.
