There has been significant discussion recently regarding the uptick in HBCU enrollment. In recent years, enrollment increases across the HBCU landscape have been attributed to a variety of reasons. Some cite the political atmosphere as a reason, noting that HBCUs serve as a reprieve for students fleeing overt racism and racial microaggressions present in communities and schools.

Fundraise or Die Trying: Bennett, Cheyney and the Future of HBCUs
In 2019, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are learning the hard way that fundraising over $8.2 million dollars in less than 60 days may not be enough to keep hope alive. The $8.2 million dollar figure refers to the amount raised by North Carolinaâs Bennett College between December 2018 and February 2019 as a part of the #StandwithBennett campaign that garnered national attention after celebrities publicly endorsed the collegeâs effort to retain its accreditation.
