Writers Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in contributing to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, the only biweekly newsmagazine that covers minority issues in higher education. Because Diverse is a newsmagazine, a jury of your peers does not scrutinize scholarly submissions, but rather our editors. We accept submissions from scholars and reserve the right to publish works according
to our needs and edit those works for our purposes as well. There are several venues in our magazine for submissions from higher education faculty, administrators and students.

The Last Word

Found on the final editorial page of the magazine, The Last Word is a perspective piece in which the author can express an opinion on any higher education topic. Our best submissions often include some statistics or a historical content to illustrate the point. We prefer to publish timely pieces. Usually recent court rulings, significant congressional activity, or any other news-related events surrounding a development in higher education provide a compelling basis upon which to write an opinion for this section.

The Guidelines:

The Last Word submissions should be 600-800 words long maximum and sent via e-mail to the editor or by mail, on disk, as a word or text document. You  should also send a color photograph of yourself with a brief description of your title and role in higher education.

Diverse Forum

Not a regular standing feature, the Diverse Forum is usually published when we have interesting scholarly submissions or longer in-depth opinion pieces. We are looking for pieces that take a thought-provoking look at a problem facing underrepresented populations in higher education and offers possible solutions. These submissions do not need to be related to any particular news item, but should be written from the point-of-view of the author and may offer some personal scholarship or experience as background.

The Guidelines:

Diverse Forum submissions should be 800-1,000 words long maximum and sent via e-mail to the editor or by mail, on disk, as a word or text document. You should also send a color photograph of yourself with a brief description of your title and role in higher education. Other related photos are welcome as well.

Diverse Book Review

We are looking for reviews of new books with new scholarship pertaining to underrepresented populations in higher education. Reviews should take a scholarly approach and help readers to see how the text might fit into the curriculum.

The Guidelines:

DI Book Review submissions should be 800 words long maximum and sent via e-mail to the editor or by mail, on a disk, as a word or text document along
with a brief description of your title and role in higher education.

Grants Awards/Events

Listings for the Grants & Awards section as well as the calendar section may be mailed, faxed or e-mailed to the editor.

On the Move/Professional

Appointments Please send new professional appointments, along with a color photograph to the editor at the address listed above. Announcements and photos also may be e-mailed to the editor. See Diverse Forum/Last Word for digital photo specifications.

Bright Ideas

Have a story idea? Please e-mail story suggestions to the editor. Please include your name and phone number.

A Note of Advice:

Submissions should be accessible to all our readers. While we pride ourselves on publishing articles on cutting-edge scholarship and issues impacting minorities in higher education, we want to make your work accessible to the general public as well. We would like to see writing that
is relaxed as well as thought provoking. We look forward to working with you in the future.
