North Carolina A&T State University received $3 million to be allocated over the next four years from the U.S. Department of Education’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs and matching funds to implement a
program initiative to help local students finish high school and
encourage them to pursue a college education.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has received a five-year, $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. The NSF grant is designed to enhance recruitment, retention and support for minority doctoral students in the fields of
science, math and engineering.

The University of New Mexico will receive $1.5 million for an endowed chair in information science technology from the Spanish electric company, Iberdrola. The endowment will be used to hire a permanent, tenured faculty member.
The University of South Dakota received $2 million from the Freedom Forum to build the Al Neuharth Media Center. Neuharth, a 1950 USD graduate, founded USA Today and the Freedom Forum, a foundation dedicated to a free press.

Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina received a $1.8 million grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to
establish the Center for Community Safety and to continue the work of a broad-based juvenile justice initiative, using the same approach in addressing other violence-related issues.

Xavier University of Louisiana will receive more than $800,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to renew the
university’s Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program for an additional four years. The program had a 100 percent success rate in spring 2000 in placing its graduates into
postbaccalaureate programs.
