California State Polytechnic University has received a two-year, $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to aid the university in producing more graduates specializing in cyber security. Educators will be able to enhance their curricula with this grant and encourage students to get into the new field.

California State University, Northridge has received a $23,500 grant from the National Collegiate Innovators and Inventors Alliance to provide seed money to student entrepreneurs and faculty to make prototypes of their ideas. The NCIIA grant will also help implement a course in product development and entrepreneurship.

Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs Center for Health Equity (Ohio) has received more than $900,000 in funds from the National Institutes of Health. Specifically, the funds will be used to address health disparities across the Cleveland metropolitan area.

Johnson C. Smith University (N.C.) has received $1 million from the Wachovia Foundation to expand the Wachovia Excellence Endowed Scholarship, which is currently funded at $90,000. Some of the funds will also go to launch the JCSU Student Leadership Program. Through the SLP, students will focus on enhancing professional and leadership skills.

Norfolk State University has received a $100,000 endowment from NSU Board of Visitors member Gary T. McCollum and his wife Fredericka A. McCollum. The funds will be used to create the Gary T. McCollum Endowment Fund to support the Achievers Inspired to Move High (AIM High) Scholarship Program at the university.

Temple University (Pa.) will receive a $2.4 million grant to encourage and prepare more of its science and mathematics majors to teach at the middle school and high school levels. The funds were donated from the recently established National Math and Science Initiative in Dallas.

The University of Illinois at Chicago was awarded $1.2 million in grants to promote public safety programs. Granted by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the funds will be used for programs that focus on methamphetamine abuse, gangs and campus security.

Real estate developer Sonny Astani has donated $17 million to the University of Southern California, his alma mater, to advance the study of “megacities.” USC is now naming an engineering department in his honor and is dedicating it to the study of urban areas that have 10 million or more residents. Astani earned his master’s in engineering from USC.
