Professional Appointments

John Payton has been appointed director-counsel and president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Most recently, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale and Dorr. Payton earned a bachelor’s from Pomona College and a law degree from Harvard Law School.


Dr. Tracey D. Ford has been named director of the Center for Academic Excellence at North Carolina A&T State University. Most recently, she was assistant director of the African American Cultural Center at the University of Georgia. She earned a bachelor’s at Norfolk State University, a master’s at Howard University and a doctorate at UGA.


Dr. W. Victor Maconachy has been appointed vice president and chief academic officer of Capitol College (Md.). Previously, he served as deputy senior computer science authority for the National Security Agency. Maconachy received his bachelor’s and master’s from Frostburg State University and his doctorate from the University of Maryland, College Park.


Suzanne Murphy has been named vice president for development and external affairs at Columbia University Teachers College. Most recently, she was vice president of college resources at Sarah Lawrence College. Murphy holds a bachelor’s from Marymount Manhattan College and two master’s from Columbia University.


Dr. Craig D. Swenson, president-elect of Argosy University, has been appointed to the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity by the U.S. Department of Education. Swenson earned a bachelor’s from the University of Utah, a master’s from Brigham Young University and a doctorate from Walden University.


Dr. Jack Thomas has been named provost and academic vice president at Western Illinois University. Formerly, he was senior vice provost for academic affairs at Middle Tennessee State University. He earned a bachelor’s at Alabama A&M?University, a master’s at Virginia State University and a doctorate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.


Allen P. Vital has been appointed vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the university foundation at Alabama A&M University. He holds a bachelor’s from Southern University and a master’s from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.


Dr. Marcus A. Whitehurst has been named assistant vice provost for educational equity at The Pennsylvania State University. Whitehurst earned a bachelor’s and master’s from Binghamton University, State University of New York, and a master’s and doctorate from Pennsylvania State University.


Dr. Mary C. Wyatt has been appointed vice president for academic affairs at Savannah State University (Ga.). She earned a bachelor’s from Virginia State University, a master’s from Washington State University in Pullman and a doctorate from Florida State University.
