Clark Atlanta President to Retire in July

Clark Atlanta University President Walter Broadnax will retire in July.

Broadnax, president since 2002, had come under fire last summer from faculty and students about his leadership of the school. Faculty and students called for his resignation, citing rising tuition and cost-cutting measures, such as the closure of various programs, that Broadnax said were necessary to close a $25 million deficit.

Last summer, he defended his tenure and told Diverse he planned to stay.

“Not going anywhere,” Broadnax said. “That’s not the plan.”

Dr. Carlton E. Brown, the former president of Savannah State University who was hired to handle the day-to-day operations while Broadnax focused on fundraising, will take on the duties of interim president in August, according to The Associated Press.
