An e-mail rumor accusing the University of Kentucky of dropping its course on the Holocaust “because it offended the Muslim population, which claims it never occurred” is continuing to fool recipients and irritate the UK community, according to an article in The New York Times.
The e-mail started circulating late April last year and has been forwarded all over the world. The university has tried to refute the rumor in the media but has been unsuccessful.
It is believed that the rumor started from an article published in London’s The Daily Telegraph. The article discussed a school in Birmingham, England, that had stopped teaching about the Holocaust because of fear that it would generate anti-Semitic comments from Muslim students. Apparently, some readers mistook the suffix for British e-mail addresses, “uk,” to mean the “University of Kentucky” rather than “United Kingdom.”
