Howard University Housing Project Launches With Urban Computer Network

Howard University and Verizon Washington, a major telephone company in the District of Columbia, announced the launch of a community Web site <www.ledroitpark.org>, a resource for neighborhood residents providing them with information on local activities, businesses, restaurants and churches. The launch of the Web site coincided with the December completion of the construction of 40 Howard University-owned homes in historic LeDroit Park.
The Howard University LeDroit Park Homeownership Initiative represents a strategic partnership that intends to serve as a national model for community revitalization in an urban area. The partnership includes Howard University, the Fannie Mae Corporation, Verizon Washington and other community partners.
“We celebrate a major victory, the elimination of blight in this community, and the arrival of 40 new families to our neighborhood,” says Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert. “The many partners involved in this initiative have committed the resources, time and talent to make sure that our beautiful community continues to be a strong presence in this great city.”
The community Web site is designed as an Intranet site so that LeDroit Park residents can post information about upcoming community activities and easily communicate with each other.
“Verizon Washington is pleased to announce the launch of a Web site for LeDroit Park,” says Marie Johns, president of Verizon Washington. “This is the next step in transforming this historic neighborhood into a model urban ‘e-village’ where neighbors can share, learn and build a strong community using the Internet.”
