Groups Want Lawmaker Removed for Mexican Worker Comments

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.

Hispanic groups offended by a lawmaker who referred to Mexican immigrant workers as “illiterate peasants” protested his comments and demanded that he be punished.

The protesters held signs at a Colorado Springs park calling for Rep. Douglas Bruce’s removal from office. The Colorado Springs Republican made his remarks this week during a debate on the House floor on a bill that would help Mexican migrant workers get temporary visas to work on Colorado farms.

Bruce stated that Colorado didn’t need “5,000 more illiterate peasants.”

The Democratic Latino Initiative of El Paso County and the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition were among the groups participating in the protest Saturday.

Lawmakers have declined to discipline Bruce for his remarks.
