Art From HBCUs On Exhibit at Fisk, Tennessee State UniversitiesNashville
The art exhibit, “To Conserve a Legacy: American Art from Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” is on display at Fisk University Galleries and the Tennessee State Museum.
The exhibit, which contains more than 200 works of art including paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures, represents an extensive holding of American art, including works by Josef Alberts, Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, Roy DeCarava, Aaron Douglas, Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, Sam Gilliam, Marsden Hartley, William H. Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, Edmonia Lewis, Georgia O’Keefe, Horace Pippin and several others.
For more than 130 years, many of the nation’s HBCUs amassed significant collections of American art and founded galleries and museums on their campuses. These collections provide a rich resource for the study of 19th and 20th century American art, with special emphasis on African American art.
The exhibit will highlight African American art from six HBCUs’ collections, placing this work within the full historical context and stylistic range of American art and culture. The six HBCUs include: Clark Atlanta University, Fisk University, Hampton University, Howard University, North Carolina Central University and Tuskegee University.
The exhibit opened Jan. 13 and will continue through April 1.
